Did any of the successors to the old SPAM-L list ignite and take off?

There was only one. Those couple of "land grabs" don't count. Anyone who was paying attention knew which list to subscribe to in order to carry on with Spam-L pretty much uninterrupted.

Not really--the PTB had a vision of micromanaging the list (see "micro-herding cats") that I disagree with.
I was just curious when I realized I never see mention of them here.
In retrospect, it surprises me that they didn't jump into the "sightings" fray.

Actually, the difference of opinion was over my reluctance to micromanage what others posted. That and the insistence that we (moderators) refer to ourselves as "room mothers" (or something like that).
